the myth of upsc

i read a recent thread in a forum where out of 24 in a class only 9 appeared for the exam.my own class saw 16 in 24 appear....makes you wonder how many out of 5,40,000 actually appeared....while both examples above could be an extreme case, even if an average two in every 24 were absent,45000 of the candidates vanish...i am sure the number here is very very very conservative, and in reality the figure is upwards of a lakh, though i lack the resources to prove it at this point in time...the reason for all this number crunching is to high light how much of a misleading nature statistics can have in such an examination.......to quote navjot singh siddhu(with no affront to the subject),statistics are like a bikini....what they hide is more important than what they reveal...................
with so many not making it every year, the myth created around upsc se only grows per year,so much so that its only with a great deal of effort that we can sort out the few facts contained from the useless banter in the myth......this is unnerving for any candidate, and so i have decided to update my actual experience here in this blog to get a first hand perspective to things........hope some day some one will find it useful!
